Guidelines for ADHD child medications

The general guidelines followed by the physicians to treat the ADHD child include the first line ADHD child medications that comprises of stimulants like Ritalin, Adderall, Dexedrine and the non-stimulant Strattera. Stimulants are available in several formulations of amphetamine and methylphenidate.


The duration of actions are categorized as short, intermediate and long acting forms. Stimulants play an important part in ADHD child medications. Some of the long acting stimulants of the ADHD child medications are Adderall XR, Ritalin LA, Metadate CD and Concerta. The stimulants of ADHD child medications exist as capsule, liquid and chewable forms.

Also there exist controversies with ADHD child medications. Often the controversies will fell upon stimulants. ADHD child medications include second line medications or it can be alternative to stimulants. Usually physicians switch over to the second line ADHD child medications only if when the child either fails or not suitable for the first line ADHD child medications. Headaches, nervousness, weight loss and abdominal pain are common side effects of Ritalin. Adderall is now becoming one of the mostly prescribed ADHD child medications. Adderall’s duration of action lasts about six hours per dose. Comparing to Ritalin, Adderall is less callous. Adderall prevails a higher possibility of abuse and sometimes lead to addiction.

ADHD child medications also include Concerta, which appears in market as the longest acting. The duration of action of Concerta prevails up to twelve hours. Like Adderall, Concerta provide longer and more active than Ritalin. The common side effects of Concerta include headaches, sleeplessness, dizziness and increased cough. Studies on ADHD child medications illustrate that particularly stimulants cause severe reactions among the young children. These ADHD child medications do effectively work on greater part of children along with the some sort of side effects.
