Medications for Psoriatic Arthritis TreatmentThere are
a plenty of psoriatic arthritis treatment options available today. The
psoriatic arthritis treatment options can be classified into two major
groups which include non-durg treatments and drug treatments. The non-drug
treatment options of psoriatic arthritis treatment involve the use of
therapies such as relaxation therapy, physiotherapy, and occupational
therapy. The drug treatment options of psoriatic arthritis treatment
involve the use of medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs commonly
called as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and disease
modifying drugs (DMDs). Each of these psoriatic arthritis treatment
options has its own unique advantages and side effects.
Disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) used as part of psoriatic arthritis treatment helps slow down the progression of psoriatic arthritis in an individual. The DMDs used in psoriatic arthritis treatment are not fast acting drugs like NSAIDs and so can take several weeks of a few months to show some results. Some of the common disease modifying drugs used in psoriatic arthritis treatment includes Methotrexate, Ciclosporin, Sulfasalazine, and Sodium Aurothiomalate in the form of gold injections. Some of the other common disease modifying drugs used in psoriatic arthritis treatment include Penicillamine, Chloroquine, Acitretin, and Corticosteroids such as Prednisolone. Side effects caused by DMDs used in psoriatic arthritis treatment include diarrhoea, nausea, skin rash, hair loss and serious problems to liver and kidneys.
