About Athlete Foot, its Symptoms & Treatment Information

Athlete foot is a common skin infection that is caused by a fungus. The medical term for foot fungus is tinea pedis. The fungus is a plant-like microorganism too small to be seen by the naked eye that mainly depends on dead tissue for nutrition and growth. As athletes are at high risk of getting this disease,it is called as Athletes foot. The use of public showers, swimming pools and locker rooms can cause foot fungus in an individual. One can get athlete foot by simply walking barefoot on these areas. Infrequent washing of feet and hot and humid weather are some of the other factors that result in athlete foot. Athlete foot affects not only athletes but also anyone whose feet tends to be damp or sweaty.

Many over-the-counter topical antifungal creams, gels or powders are available for curing Athlete foot. Most cases of Athlete foot can be successfully treated using these topical creams. Results are usually seen only after a few weeks of consistent treatment. Recurrence of infection is common. As a result, keeping the feet clean and dry while using topical creams helps reduce the frequency and intensity of infections. In severe cases of Athlete foot, the symptoms take a longer time than a couple of weeks to show good results. In this case, it is advisable to consult a doctor, who will prescribe a stronger antifungal cream, spray, or pill. There are a lot of stimulant medications and natural home remedies available for curing Athlete foot.

Some of the common symptoms of Athlete foot include itching, inflamed areas between the toes and on the soles of the feet as well as moist reddened scales between the toes. Blisters are also one of the symptoms of Athlete foot. The presence of blisters causes added complications, as broken blisters expose raw areas. The areas affected by Athlete foot become more inflamed and irritated on wearing footwear and hosiery. Stinging on the soles of the feet is one of the other symptoms of Athlete foot. In addition, the skin may flake, peel, blister, or crack. A doctor diagnoses the symptoms of Athlete foot by examining the affected area and taking a small scraping of the skin on your foot.
