About causes of colicThe exact
causes of colic are not known till date. But there are various factors
which are considered to be the causes of colic. The immature digestive
system of a baby is considered to be one of the causes of colic, as
the air swallowed by the baby when crying creates gas in the abdominal
area which results in pain.
Cow's milk and formula milk given to babies are considered to be one of the other causes of colic, as some bottle-fed babies and are sensitive to lactose in these milks. Ear infection is considered to be one of the other causes of colic. Pediatric regurgitation syndrome also called gastrointestinal reflux is considered one of the other causes of colic. Urinary tract infection is one of the most serious hidden causes of colic, so it is recommended to take regular urine tests of babies with colic. Skin rashes is considered to be one of the other causes of colic, as raw, burn like rash can be caused by the acid stools during diarrhea. A baking soda bath helps soothe the diaper rash caused by acid stools. Constipation is considered one of the other hidden causes of colic. Food items such as beans, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radishes, eggs, onions, and green peppers that promote gas formation is considered one of the other causes of colic. In addition, dairy products, citrus fruits, chocolate, tomatoes, caffeine containing items such as coffee, tea and sodas, and seafood are some of the other food items considered to be causes of colic in newborns.
