All About Colic InfantsColic infants
are young babies who cry inconsolably for a long period of time in a
day. Colic infants start suffering due to the symptoms from the third
or fourth week since its birth and continue to suffer till the third
to fourth month usually and up to six months to one year in rarely.
Colic infants suffering due to the symptoms do stay healthy and feed
well during this period.
The temperament of the colic infants is considered to be the other major cause of symptoms, as this makes the baby highly sensitive to the environment and so the baby reacts to normal stimulation or changes to the environment by crying. Some problems in the immature digestive system of the colic infants create abdominal pain which results in increased discomfort to the infant. Some colic infants may be allergic to cows milk, as a protein in the milk of cows is suspected to cause the symptoms. The immature nervous system of the colic infants is considered one of the other causes of symptoms.Colic infants should not be given gas promoting food items such as beans, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radishes, eggs, onions, and green peppers, as this may worsen the symptoms. In addition, the colic infants should not be given dairy products, citrus fruits, chocolate, tomatoes, caffeine containing items such as coffee, tea and sodas, and seafood, as these items are also considered to worsen the symptoms. Colic infants can be given gripe water which is one of the medications containing natural ingredients that helps relieve excessive gas trapped in the intestines and avoids painful cramps. Lifting their head, drawing their legs up to their tummy, reddening of the face and passing wind are some of the common symptoms of colic infants. Refusing to eat and facing difficulty in falling and staying asleep are some of the other common symptoms of colic infants.
