Treatment for Chronic Bronchitis - An Overview

No specific treatment for chronic bronchitis is available today to cure the symptoms. The main aim of any treatment is to provide some relief to the patients and to prevent the occurrence of any complications. Avoiding smoking and staying away from respiratory irritants are some of the preventive measures that need to be taken during the course of a treatment to prevent the symptoms from getting worse.



A treatment for chronic bronchitis can involve the use of medications, exercise programs, awareness programs, and some therapies. Medications are used as part of a treatment to cure the symptoms of bronchitis only if the infection is mild. For severe cases, the treatment for chronic bronchitis involves performing a surgery.
Medications used as part of the treatment for chronic bronchitis dilate the airways and decrease inflammation. Antibiotics are a type of medication used only if the infection is bacterial.

Corticosteroids are another type of medication used in the treatment for chronic bronchitis during flare-ups of wheezing and when patients with severe infections do not respond to conventional treatments. The type of drugs used in the treatment for chronic bronchitis to relax and open up air passage in the lungs is known as bronchodilator drugs. The drugs can be either be used as inhaler or taken as pills. Some of the exercise programs used as part of the treatment for chronic bronchitis include physical exercise programs and breathing exercises which have proven to be effective in curing the symptoms.

Awareness programs used as part of the treatment for chronic bronchitis include patient education programs which provide a better knowledge of the condition for the patient. One of the therapies used in the treatment in severe cases is oxygen therapy. In very severe cases, the treatment for chronic bronchitis involves performing lung transplantation surgery to save the patient. Any treatment is designed to help reduce the extent of irritation in the bronchial tubes and hence to reduce the level of discomfort suffered by the patient.
