Child Anxiety - An OverviewChild anxiety causes unusual fear, worry, and uneasiness to such extent that it disturbs normal functioning. Child anxiety if left untreated can cause various types of anxiety disorders in the child. The anxiety disorders caused by child anxiety can range from a simple adjustment disorder to more difficult and debilitating disorders such as panic disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder.
Social phobia, specific phobia, adjustment disorder with anxiety, and anxiety disorder due to a general medical condition are some of the other types of anxiety disorders caused by child anxiety. Drug-induced anxiety disorder and anxiety disorder not otherwise specified are some of the other types of anxiety disorders caused by child anxiety. The treatments for child anxiety can be categorized into three groups which include psychological treatments, psychopharmacological treatments, and environmental treatments. Cognitive behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, and behavioral therapy are some of the psychological therapies used to cure child anxiety. Psychopharmacological treatments deployed to cure child anxiety use medications such as benzodiazepines, serotonergic agents, tricyclic antidepressants, combination serotonin/norepinephrine agents, antihistamines, and tranquilizers. Some of the tranquilizers commonly used to cure child anxiety include Zyprexa, Risperdal, Seroquel, Mellaril, Thorazine, Stelazine, Moban, Navane, Prolixin, and Haldol. Avoidance or minimization of stimulants such as caffeine, good sleep habits, and reduction of stressors are some of the environmental treatments used to cure child anxiety.
