Child Anxiety - An Overview

Child anxiety causes unusual fear, worry, and uneasiness to such extent that it disturbs normal functioning. Child anxiety if left untreated can cause various types of anxiety disorders in the child. The anxiety disorders caused by child anxiety can range from a simple adjustment disorder to more difficult and debilitating disorders such as panic disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder.



Some of the common symptoms of child anxiety include refusing to go to school, impaired relations with peers, and low self-esteem. Plenty of treatment methods are available to cure child anxiety. A child may be forced to alcohol or other drug use, problems adjusting to work situations and anxiety disorder in adulthood, if child anxiety is not treatment in time. Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and acute stress disorder are some of the types of anxiety disorder caused by child anxiety.

Social phobia, specific phobia, adjustment disorder with anxiety, and anxiety disorder due to a general medical condition are some of the other types of anxiety disorders caused by child anxiety. Drug-induced anxiety disorder and anxiety disorder not otherwise specified are some of the other types of anxiety disorders caused by child anxiety. The treatments for child anxiety can be categorized into three groups which include psychological treatments, psychopharmacological treatments, and environmental treatments.

Cognitive behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, and behavioral therapy are some of the psychological therapies used to cure child anxiety. Psychopharmacological treatments deployed to cure child anxiety use medications such as benzodiazepines, serotonergic agents, tricyclic antidepressants, combination serotonin/norepinephrine agents, antihistamines, and tranquilizers. Some of the tranquilizers commonly used to cure child anxiety include Zyprexa, Risperdal, Seroquel, Mellaril, Thorazine, Stelazine, Moban, Navane, Prolixin, and Haldol. Avoidance or minimization of stimulants such as caffeine, good sleep habits, and reduction of stressors are some of the environmental treatments used to cure child anxiety.
