Children can suffer due to varied types of sleep disorders. Sleep disorders makes if difficult for a child to lead a normal life. Disturbed sleep affects all the activities performed in a day. Some sleep disorders experienced by the child diminish on its own as the child grows older, whereas some other types of sleep disorders can develop into a serious problem and can cause long lasting effects on the child. Obstructive sleep apnea causes episodes of cessation of breathing during night time sleep, several hundred times in a night. Snoring is a warning indication that the sleeper may be a victim of sleep apnea. Narcolepsy is a disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and periods of muscle weakness. This child sleep disorder causes accidents and injury from falling asleep while driving or doing other dangerous tasks.A sleep disorder that keeps the child awake night after night and that leads to sleep deprivation is called insomnia. Seasonal affective disorder is caused by insufficient sunlight during the long dark days of winter.

Delayed sleep phase syndrome is a debilitating disorder where the circadian rhythm seems to be reversed. This disorder severely damages nighttime sleeping and the excessive daytime sleepiness interferes with the normal functioning of the child. Restless legs syndrome is a sleep disorder that causes burning, itching, crawling sensations in the legs. These sensations force the victim to move the limbs to get some relief. Sleepwalking is one of the other common sleep disorders that are considered not so harmful, provided the sleeper is in a ground floor room that is free of obstacles.
