A person using the medication for cold sores should avoid picking cold sores, since picking cold sores may spread the cold sores to other parts of the body. Most of the medication for cold sores can be bought over the counter without prescription. For some persons the attack of cold sores may be severe. In that case usage of anti-HSV pills as a medication for cold sores would prove fruitful. Application of aciclovir cream during the initial stages of the outbreak would reduce the duration of cold sores in a person.

Acidophilus capsules, aloe juice, a mix of camphor and spirits, cornstarch, lemon balm, herbs like chapparal, topical ointments or creams which contain more zinc are the most commonly used medication for cold sores. Topical ointments or creams that contain high zinc if used during the initial outbreak of cold sores, would help to reduce the duration of the cold sores. Dimethyl sufoxide and herbs like Lomatium are also among the commonly used medication for cold sores.
