Various Causes Concerning Hair Loss in Women

When it comes to the causes for hair loss in women, there are three main causes and each and every cause has to be treated differently.

First, a thorough clinical test may be required to determine the underlying cause and then a decision has to be taken on the appropriate treatment methods.

What is Androgenetic Alopecia and who are susceptible to such problem?

Both men and women suffer from androgenetic alopecia, which is nothing but a form of hair loss. In men, hair loss will be over the forehead and in the case of women they tend lose hair all over the head leading to a sparse presence of hair.

The hair loss in women due to androgenetic alopecia is mainly due to inheritance like men.

When women inherit this trait, they tend to produce more of male hormone testosterone, and that in turn enhances the production of DHT, also known as dihydrotestesterone, a byproduct of testosterone. Presence of DHT is the major cause for hair loss in both men and women.

Any woman will have traces of testosterone hormone in her blood and any excess of it may lead to hair growth over the face and abdominal area, hair-thinning problem, and the woman may have a coarse voice.

Women after giving birth to a child will also face hair loss problem due to a sudden change in the hormone levels, but however, the situation will become normal, as the body will be back to the original pre-pregnancy hormonal level.

Women also tend to lose hair during their menopause stage again due to the same reason of hormonal changes taking place in the body.

Stages of Hair Growth and Anagen/Telogen Effluvium

The normal growth cycle of any hair has got stages such as anagen and tenogen. The first anagen stage is the growth stage where in the hair grows at the rate of ¼ inch a month and the stage last for about 4 to 7 years.

Anagen effluvium is a condition wherein the hair follicles lose its strength for reasons such as chemotherapy, and results in hair loss in women.

The second stage is telogen stage where in the hair follicle will go in for a rest period and there will not be any hair growth during this stage.

The telogen stage normally lasts for few months and is regarded as a resting stage. Telogen effluvium is a condition where in many more hair follicles will enter into the resting stage and lead to hair loss once the rest period is over.

The condition may be a result of things that happened few months before forcing more of hair follicles to enter into resting stage.

One can find this telogen effluvium condition after delivery of the child and it is the common reason for hair loss in women especially after pregnancy.

Telogen effluvium is triggered by the change in the hormonal level after pregnancy period and what ever the additional anagen stage attained during the pregnancy will turn to be a telogen stage leading to hair loss.

The best explained reason for pregnant women getting luxurious hair growth during pregnancy and subsequent loss of hair after the delivery.

Hair loss due to telogen effluvium can also be caused due to stress, use of birth control pills, hypo or hyper-thyroidism, and various other reasons.

The final stage in hair growth is that after reaching the telogen stage, the hair follicle will again enter the anagen stage for the second time and grow a new hair strand pushing the old one out.

And hence, the person will have a normal natural hair loss of around 50 to 100 hair stands daily during this phase.

Types of Alopecia

There are few alopecia conditions both in men and women. For instance Alopecia areata is known to affect both men and women, and results in patchy baldness.

Many doctors still opine that this is due to your body’s autoimmune response, where by your body will start rejecting the hair.

Further, hair loss can be a resultant response to a variety of conditions such as hormonal imbalances, arthritis, few autoimmune disorders, syphilis and other health conditions.

When alopecia aerata is known for its lesser effect on hair loss, the more severe form of alopecia totalis is responsible for total baldness.

A still more dreaded situation is Alopecia universalis where in the affected person will lose hair all over the body irrespective of whether it is on the head or chest or on back or on eyelashes.

It is becoming a challenge for controlling hair loss in women, as they are more prone to hormonal alterations all through the life.

For any effective hair loss treatment, especially in women, one need to get the underlying reason diagnosed correctly for getting back the normal hair growth.
