The problem with halitosis is detection. It is very difficult for a person to detect his bad breath and easy for someone else to do so. Normally this would require the help of a close friend or spouse or someone with whom you can discuss the problem without feeling pressurized or embarrassed. This kind of self monitoring is the best way. There are some clinical tests available, but these are not commonly available in all dentists offices. Further these have not been proven to be accurate in diagnosing or measuring bad breath.
Tonsillar infections and other types of infections in the gums, diseases like bronchitis or pneumonia, and gastrointestinal problems can also cause halitosis and in these causes prevention of halitosis depends partially on preventing or curing the infection or problem. Certain other diseases like liver disease or diabetes can also cause halitosis or bad breath, and prevention of halitosis is very difficult in these cases and so some kind of medication or medicines might be required.
Another common cause of halitosis is dehydration, which is caused due to excessive exercises or in some cases due to medications of diabetes or other diseases. In such cases the cause is due to dryness in the mouth and prevention of halitosis involves keeping oneself well hydrated. The various factors that cause halitosis and the different prevention practices to keep oneself free of halitosis are well documented and are available easily over the internet or with the nearest dentist.
