Heartburn is a symptom caused when acids in the stomach flows back to the esophagus, which causes acid reflux. This is usually the result of improper food or diet taken by the person. When neglected the condition becomes very severe resulting esophageal cancer. Therefore, here are some of the foods that cause heartburn.

The diet of a person includes a variety of foods, which includes all the nutrients to give a balanced diet. However, some foods when taken give heartburn to some and this varies from person to person. A person who is prone to acid reflux and heartburn need to modify his/her diet and avoid some foods that cause heartburn.

Citrus fruits and juices, which are rich in citric acids, increase the level of acids in the stomach, which in turn causes heartburn. The excess acid makes the valve between the stomach and the esophagus weak, which allows the acid to leak into the esophagus from the stomach and that cause acid reflux and heartburn. Lemon, orange, cranberries are some of the citrus fruits and juices that when avoided stops heartburn.

Vegetables that cause heartburn are raw onions and potatoes. It is best to avoid raw onions and potatoes in the form of French fries are rich in fat content which take more acids to digest and causes heartburn. Fried foods and food rich in fat is best when kept away for people prone to acid reflux symptoms and heartburn. Stay away from tomato and tomato based foods like pizza. These can loosen the sphincter between the stomach and the esophagus.

Too much intake of fatty foods activates heartburn and so to prevent it one should keep away from it. There are many foods with high fat content and the people who have heartburn can choose to avoid them from their preferences.

The next types of foods are the spicy type that is very tasty to eat but can trigger heartburn to people who have the tendency to it. Some people get acidity and heartburn with the intake of chocolates, mint and foods with vinegar. As the types of foods that cause heartburn differ from one person to another, they are the best judge to decide to which food when avoided can relieve from heartburn.
