Heartburn is a condition where one experiences irritating and painful sensation in the throat, chest and stomach. This results due to the upward flow of acids from the stomach to the esophagus through the weakened esophageal sphincter. When the LES or the lower esophageal sphincter gets relaxed the acid flows from the stomach to the esophagus due to improper closing of the muscle causing acid reflux.
Many people suffer from this problem of heartburn and around 40% of Americans have heartburn. When left untreated the problem turns severe known as GERD or the gastro esophageal reflux disease.
Heartburn results due to various reasons. Food is one of the main reasons that cause heartburn. Spicy, fried and fatty foods cause heartburn. Chocolates and mint can cause the problem. Citrus fruits and juices that are rich in citric acid increase the acids in the stomach resulting in acid reflux and heartburn.
Alcohol and smoking weakens the LES causing acidity and heartburn. Tomatoes and tomato based food items are best when avoided by people who are prone to heartburn.
Fatty and fried foods take longer time to be digested which results in great pressure on the stomach which in turn puts force of the LES allowing the muscles to contract and letting the acids into the esophagus causing heartburn. Studies in this subject say that intake of small and frequent meals helps in reducing heartburn. Never go to bed or lies down immediately after taking food. Maintain upright position for two to three hours after food. Keep the head raised with the help of a pillow when lying down or sleeping. These will check the acids from flowing to the esophagus from the stomach. When heartburn turns into a serious problem take the help of a doctor who can cure it with medications and if the problem becomes acute, he will decide on surgery that can put an end to the heartburn problem.
