Alternative Therapy for Obsessive Compulsive DisorderObsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder where a person has recurrent and unwanted ideas or impulses (called obsessions) and an urge or compulsion to do something to relieve the discomfort caused by the obsession.
The thoughts range from the idea of losing control or ones thought surrounds to keep his/ her body clean. Senseless, repetitive, distressing, and sometimes harmful are the behaviors of the affected individual. OCD is a serious mental disorder, which is more treatable than ever. Without the appropriate treatment, it affects a person's ability to function in every day activities, one's work, one's family, and one's social life. Though so many psychiatric drugs are available, most of the patients prefer alternate therapy due to its advantage. OCD can be cured with psychiatric drugs like clomipramine, Prozac or other SSRI's (drugs which prevent the uptake of serotonin). Though these drugs relieve the symptoms of OCD, these are expensive and associated with risks of side effects. Cognitive therapy is found to be very beneficial and can make a marked improvement in the symptom picture of people with OCD. A Clinical Psychologist who is experienced in the field of OCD should carry out the counseling and psychotherapy. There are also natural alternatives to the psychiatric drugs, which will help to balance serotonin levels and therefore reduce or eliminate the symptoms of OCD.
