Effective Medications for Obsessive Compulsive DisorderAnxious thoughts and repeated works that are performed in an attempt to reduce the anxious thoughts are termed as obsessive compulsive disorder.
The thoughts can be unwelcome thoughts that can even hurt others or any sexual thoughts that are not accepted in your society and are found to be against the religious beliefs. For example frequent thoughts of violence and the fear of hurting others due to those thoughts is an obsessive compulsive disorder. Such disturbing thoughts are called obsessions and the work that you do to avoid those thoughts are called the compulsions. The work that you do to avoid those thoughts provide you with a temporary relief only. It is found that even healthy people are found to have some symptoms of OCD. Some people may check the stove before they leave the kitchen. Some others may check the lock few times before moving out of their house. The time they spend in such activities will be more. Treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder can be done using medications and psychotherapy. Medications that are taken to treat OCD keep the anxiety in control. Some of the OCDs can be well treated with psychotherapy. Anti depressants are used to treat OCD. New anti depressants that act on the chemical messenger of the brain called the serotonin is available. These medications are called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). Sexual
dysfunction can also happen while taking this medication for OCD. Some
of the SSRIs that are used in treating OCDs are Fluoxetine, sertraline,
fluvoxamine, paroxetine, and citalopram. Medications like these are
given in very low doses and gradually increased to the therapeutic levels.
Antidepressants called tricyclics are also given to treat OCDs. Some
of the side effects of tricyclics are dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth,
and gain in weight. Clomipramine is a tricyclic that is recommended
