Identifying Obsessive Compulsive Disorders in ChildrenA survey on obsessive compulsive disorder states that about 0.5% of the children and adolescents are affected by these disorders. They cause sever discomfort in children.
Recurrent and persistent unwanted thoughts are marked by anxiety and distress in children. Compulsions like hand washing, checking some things frequently, are found in children who are affected by obsessive compulsive disorder. Such children are found to be interfered in their academics and social activities and other relationships. For example frequently checking the books in his / her bags to see that they have not left anything at home before they leave for school comes under OCD. They may often check that to relieve their anxiety. OCD is a brain disorder and this may be inherited. OCD can be treated effectively by using psychotherapy and medications like SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). A psychiatrist should be approached for treating children who are affected by OCD. Some of the common obsessions in children include fear of dirt or germ, fear of contamination, need for order, religious obsessions, lucky and unlucky numbers, aggressive thoughts, fear of illness and intrusive sounds. Some of the children may even tend to take a particular food repeatedly. Compulsions
like ordering or arranging things, counting rituals, touching rituals
and repeating some work often. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) combined
with medications is effective in treating OCD in children. Medications
like Fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paraxetine, and sertaline are used in
treating OCD. Such medications are used to control anxiety in children.
Parents of children with OCD should understand OCD clearly and try to
encourage and praise the child for any small improvements in their activities.
This would be of more help to the children to recover faster from OCD.
The parents should know that children recover at different rates and
they should not compare the children activities daily.
