Simple methods for treating obsessive compulsive disorderFor some people the obsessive compulsive disorder may interrupt their daily life. It interrupts in such a way that they tend to spend most of the time to avoid thoughts that are obsessive.
If you look at the total time spent on works that are done to avoid obsessive thoughts, it could be hours. Checking of the stoves and the locks of the house are some common work that is often done even if they know that is stupid to check frequently. Violent thoughts and sexual thoughts that are not accepted in their religion also come under the obsessive compulsive disorder. OCDs are treated with medications that are antidepressants to avoid those unwanted thoughts and to control anxiety in the patients. Psychotherapy is found to be more effective in treating OCDs. Anti depressants in low doses are given to patients who suffer from OCDs. The dosage is increase gradually until it reaches the therapeutic levels. Anti depressants like Fluoxetine, sertraline, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, and citalopram are used in treating obsessive compulsive disorders. These medications are effective for people are also having panic disorder and social phobia. Clomipramine and Imipramine are used in the treatment of OCDs. Some of the side effects of using such anti depressants are dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, and gain in weight. Phenelzine which is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor is used in treating such patients. Patients who take phenelzine should avoid taking cheese and red wine since the medication interacts with the chemical found in cheese and red wine to elevate the blood pressure with potential life threatening reactions. To relieve the symptoms of OCD quickly benzodiazepines are used. Once the patients feel the withdrawal symptoms the medications can be gradually reduced. Benzodiazepines like Clonazepam, Lorazepam, and alprazolam are used in treating such patients.
