Epidurals can be a very effective method of pain relief, and are usually so exact that they do not affect your ability to feel the pushing sensations during the final stage of active labor. Local anesthetic is injected into the space around the spinal cord, using a hollow tube inserted into your lower back. This numbs the nerves and the pain of contractions, although you should still be able to feel a touch on your skin. The epidural will last for about two to four hours but can be 'topped up' through the catheter, usually via a small pump that brings the anesthetic at regular intervals. Severe headaches may be treated by an epidural blood patch which is a related procedure to the epidural itself, but the anesthetist injects some of your blood to form a clot. A blood patch is normally helpful within 24 hours, during which time it is recommended that you lie down. Which foods should avoid during pregnancy? During pregnancy, it is important to eat a well-balanced and nutritious diet, in order to provide your baby with the nutrients it needs to develop. Your diet should besides give you energy for the changes taking place in your body. However, there are certain foods you shouldnt eat whilst pregnant to avoid exposing yourself to the risk of food poisoning, as they can be potentially dangerous to the unborn baby. Remember to avoid the following: soft and blue veined cheese, such as Camembert and Stilton. Eggs should only be eaten if they are cooked until both the white and the yolk are solid avoid unpasturised dairy products take care with food that contains meat at parties and buffets. During pregnancy it is usually recommended that you try to avoid all pills as much as possible, including over the counter and herbal remedies. However, your resistant system does not work as well as common during pregnancy. This makes you more vulnerable to infections and illness, so try to avoid close contact with people with flu-like symptoms whenever probable. Is it aspartame safe during pregnancy? Aspartame commercially found in many diet sodas, sugar-free foods, and the sugar substitute Equal appears to be safe for most pregnant women. However, women with an inherited inborn error of body chemistry and should avoid foods and drinks containing aspartame. How do
viruses get passed to unborn babies? Inside the womb, the bloods provide
mother and her fetus is linked. This resources that not only do nutrients
and oxygen pass to the baby, but so do both viruses and the antibodies
to fight them. If you become infected with most viruses - such as flu,
measles, and chickenpox - during pregnancy, then they can be passed
