Over-the-counter moisturizing creams containing vitamin E used in the treatment of stretch marks, helps reduce the appearance of stretch marks in addition to general skin healing. The moisturizing creams used for the treatment of stretch marks, are helpful in moisturizing the only the outer skin layer and cannot penetrate deep into the dermis where stretch marks occur. Creams containing alpha hydroxy acids are also used in the treatment of stretch marks. These creams used for the treatment of stretch marks, reduce the appearance of stretch marks by moisturizing the outer layer of skin and increase cell regeneration by burning off the outer layer of skin cells. Tretinoin, or Retin-A is one of the other creams widely used in the treatment of stretch marks. This cream loosens the keratin in the outer layer of skin and removes dead cells.

Tretinoin used in the treatment of stretch marks is available only with a prescription. Higher dosages of this cream when used for the treatment of stretch marks can cause side effects such as stinging, swelling, and redness of the skin in addition to sensitivity to sunlight. Tretinoin is not recommended for the treatment of stretch marks, during pregnancy or while nursing. Laser surgery performed for the treatment of stretch marks, simply makes the stretch marks fade and not completely remove them. As the laser responds to dark colors alone, this technique is used in the treatment of stretch marks in its early stages when they are dark red or brown in color.
