Having tonsils removed becomes unavoidable when tonsillitis blocks the breathing space and the food passage. This usually happens in children with small throat and the sockets for tonsils are shallow. It is often said that children who snore loudly while sleeping are best benefited by having their tonsils removed.
Having
tonsils removed is absolutely necessary for persons suffering from the
painful infection of peritonsillar abscess because there is every possibility
of repeated abscesses. Tonsillitis caused by bacterial infection like
strep throat caused by streptococcus bacteria does not need having tonsils
removed.
There is a misconception that tonsillectomy i.e., having tonsils removed
is performed only on children and adults do not need this procedure
at all. Actually if necessary it is performed on adults also.
Before having tonsils removed the person undergoes certain tests like blood and urine test and then the person is admitted in the hospital. The person is requested to be on empty stomach during the night before surgery. With anesthesia tonsils are removed without pain. It is usually a twenty minute process and well taken care of by the doctors and the person will be in the recovery room having his tonsils removed.
After having tonsils removed the person may feel dizzy for sometime , may develop sore throat or a slight ear ache for sometime. After having tonsils removed the person will be expected to drink fluids soon the wake up. Tonsillitis is a very common problem among children and sometimes even in adults. It can be well cured without having tonsils removed.
