Herbs for hypothyroidism can be used in various forms which include dried extracts such as capsules, powders, and teas, glycerites, or tinctures such as alcohol extracts. The herbs should be used as advised by the specialist; else it could result in some adverse effects. Usually the herbs for hypothyroidism that are used as tea should be made using one teaspoon of the herb per cup of hot water.

Steep should be covered for 5 to 10 minutes in the case of herbs that are leaves or flowers and 10 to 20 minutes for roots. Guggul and hawthorne are some of the other important herbs for hypothyroidism which are taken to counteract high cholesterol that usually accompanies hypothyroidism.Bladder wrack is one of the important herbs for hypothyroidism, which is a type of brown seaweed that contains variable amounts of iodine. It causes some potential problems such as acne, thyroid dysfunction, and heavy-metal contamination.

People who are allergic to iodine may need to avoid bladder wrack. Some of the widely used Chinese herbs for hypothyroidism include American Ginseng, Asian Ginseng, Astragalus, Bitter Melon, Bupleurum, Chinese Scullcap, and Corydalis. Some of the other Chinese herbs include Dong Quai, Eleuthero, Fo-ti, Garlic, Ginger, Ginkgo biloba, Green Tea, Licorice, and Ligustrum. Additional Chinese herbs for hypothyroidism include Maitake, Reishi, Schisandra, Shiitake, and Sweet Annie.
