List of medications for hypothyroidism

Some of the widely used medications for hypothyroidism include Levothyroid, Synthroid, Levoxyl, Cytomel, Euthroid, Thyrolar, and Armour Thyroid. The respective chemical names of these medications include levothyroxine sodium (T4), liothyronine sodium (T3), liotrix (T3 and T4), and desiccated thyroid. Most of the medications for hypothyroidism are taken by mouth.



In some unusual cases, the medications are delivered intravenously. One of the medications for hypothyroidism used in such unusual cases is myxedema coma. Dosages vary depending up on the age of the patient and the severity of hypothyroidism in that patient.Thyroid function is below normal levels or nil in patients having hypothyroidism. As a result, those patients do not get the required thyroid hormone needed for the proper functioning of the body. In this case, the medications for hypothyroidism are used for replacing the missing hormones.

The medications are prescribed for a patient whose blood tests reveal that the patient has hypothyroidism. Medications for hypothyroidism are also used when a person has mild hypothyroidism and tests positive for antithyroid antibodies and when a person has an enlarged thyroid gland. Levothyroxine is one of the widely used medications for hypothyroidism in most patients.The medications for hypothyroidism make certain noticeable changes to a patient which include improved energy level, gradual weight loss, and improved mood and mental function.

Some of the other changes include improved pumping action of the heart and improved digestive tract function. The medications for hypothyroidism helps resumed growth, improve school performance, and improved behavior in children. Reduction of cholesterol and triglyceride levels is also the result of the use of medications for hypothyroidism. When the medications are taken more than the prescribed limits, side effects such as heart palpitations, nervousness, and difficulty in sleeping is caused.
