Understanding the Grave Correlativity between Hepatitis C and HIV Infection

Among the people who are infected with HIV, most of them found to have hepatitis C virus infection too. The percentage of the people who have both is almost forty percent of the total people affected with HIV.

The route of transmission of both viruses remains the same. This could be the reason for the co-infection. Both these infections spread from person to person through injected needles, un- protected sex and blood transfusion.

The treatment for these individuals is very, very difficult. Though there is no inference in between the medications used for HIV and hepatitis C virus, but the presence of hepatitis C will worsen the condition of the people who are already infected with HIV.

There were so many studies conducted on people who are infected with HIV and hepatitis C infection. Those studies revealed that these people are “depressed lot”.

Because of this depression, they often forget to take the medicines and at times indulge in consumption of wrong medicines. As the result the recovery and even t the improvement in the condition eludes them.

The other difficulty in treating people who have both HIV and hepatitis is the doubt that arises about the treatment that needs to be started first.

This has to be decided based on the severity of the infection. In case the symptoms exhibited by the hepatitis C infection is more, then the medications for hepatitis C virus infection must be giver priority. In case the symptoms of the hepatitis C infection are mild, then naturally the HIV treatment receives priority.

The HIV untreated for some let us say 6 months, will lead to serious health complications which should be kept at the back of the mind always. At the same time the health of the liver is very important to metabolize the drugs used for the treatment of life threatening HIV infection.

Obviously the person infected with both HIV and hepatitis C will suffer more .the health of the liver will deteriorate faster. The chances of liver cancer and liver cirrhosis are more in the patients who have both hepatitis c and HIV infection.

The treatment is successful in only twenty five percent of the patients. This Poor success rate e depends on the genotype of the hepatitis C virus. As discussed earlier, the drugs used for the treatment of HIV infection hits hard on the liver and hence the health of the same is very important.

In case the person is confirmed to have both hepatitis C and HIV, then he/she must be very careful in not spreading the infection to the others. He/she must not share anything that has blood contamination.

Even sharing the tooth brush, razors too must be avoided because they may get contaminated with the blood of the infected person, thus spreading the infection to the others. There is nothing to worry if proper treatment is taken as the recovery is certainly possible.

If not the recovery the quality of the life will be much better. Hence there is no need to get bogged too much and get in to depression, thus making the treatment difficult.
