Get to Know the Varied Treatment Options for Your Hepatitis C Infection

The moment the person is diagnosed for hepatitis C infection, the next thing that will come to his mind is the possible treatment options.

Earlier, the doctors were of the opinion that acute infection [which means the person is infected within 6-8 months], needs no treatment. The infection will disappear without any treatment, they believed.

But at present, thanks to the research conducted on hepatitis C, there are treatment options for the any stage of infection. But the treatment that is offered varies depending on the age of the person. Here the weight age given is more to the age of the person than the stage of the infection.

In case the infected person is a child, then interferon treatment is attempted. There won’t be any other medication other than this. In case of acute infection, the rate of success is seventy percent. Yet the researchers are to find out the reason why the interferon treatment offers incredible success to acute infection in children.

But the parents of those children are thankful to the person who found out this treatment option. The research is still going on hepatitis C to find more about the infection and other treatment possibilities.

In case the person who is infected with hepatitis c virus is over sixty years, then the physicians do not attempt any treatment on them. The reason is that the serious complications of the hepatitis c infections such as liver cirrhosis, liver cancer takes another twenty years to develop in them.

Till that age, the person may not survive; hence the requirement of the treatment is doubtful. Those older persons will be treated for the symptoms rather for than actual cause and its elimination from the body. The doctors will advise simple changes in the life style in order to improve their quality of the life at that age.

The others, who are neither children nor old, have many different treatment options. Interferon is the best in business which can be used to treat hepatitis C in them. But interferon alone has the success rate of only 25 percent.

In others the infection may be under control for some time and can resurface again with improved vigor after some time. In order to prevent this medicine called rebavirin is usually combined with interferon.

When both these medicines are combined the rate of success improves to 40 percent from 25 percent. Both these drugs should never be used in pregnant women as these medicines can cause fetus death.

For the better results those who are on treatment for hepatitis C should follow certain restrictions. The first and fore most things are that they should stop drinking at once. The alcohol will damage the liver and hence if combines with the hepatitis C virus, the damage of the liver will be faster.

The person should not t consume over the counter medicines. The herbal preparations also must be consumed only after consulting the herbal specialist.

This is important because all the medicines are metabolized in the liver, thus putting extra work load on the organ, there by interfering with the therapy.
