Warts are a type of infection caused by virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). There are about 60 types of HPV viruses that cause various sexually transmitted diseases. Warts can appear on almost any portion of the body. Some of the places in the body where warts commonly occur include the skin, the inside of your mouth, the genitals and the rectal area.

Warts is a highly contagious disease and so can be passed on from one person to the other. Warts need to be treated properly, as they can bleed and cause pain when they are bumped. In addition, treatment decreases the chance of warts spreading to other areas of your body or to other people. In some cases, warts disappear over a period of time without the need for any treatment. Some of the different types of warts include common warts, flat warts, plantar warts, filiform warts, and genital warts.

Common warts are usually found on fingers, hands, knees, and elbows. A common wart is a small, hard bump that is dome-shaped and usually grayish-brown. Common warts have a rough surface and looks like the head of a cauliflower, with black dots inside. Flat warts which are about the size of a pinhead, are smoother than other kinds of warts, and have flat tops. Flat warts may be pink, light brown, or yellow. Flat warts can occur on the face, arms, knees, or hands in clusters.Plantar warts that occur on the bottom of the foot make the individual very uncomfortable.

Filiform warts having a finger-like shape are usually flesh-colored and occur around the mouth, eyes, or nose. Genital warts also called condyloma are soft warts that usually occur on the genitalia, within the vagina, on the cervix, on the penis, and around the anus or within the rectum. Applying salicylic acid on the warts found on places such as the hands, feet or knees is one of the widely used treatment methods. Applying cantharidin on the warts is one of the other treatment methods. Some pain and blistering of the wart can be experienced after about 3 to 8 hours of the application of cantharidin on the warts.
